Workshop with Joan Hyman
Working in Progression
17 September
Saturday morning 09.30 - 12.30
The Art of Practice
The practice of yoga is taught in a progressive form meaning, in order to advance in the practice, we need to understand the fundamentals in certain postures that are considered a gateway into more advanced postures. There is a specific order that is taught when learning yoga asana. In order to be able to stand on our hands, we have to be able to stand strong and even on our feet. Arm Balances and Inversions educate the use of the bandhas which are energetic locks that help to distribute energy cultivating lightness and ease. Backbends prep us for pranayama which help us access our subtle layer as well as the heart space. We need to advance in our practice and practice postures that challenge us, so we can recognize the hook of our ego and ultimately let go of resistance that holds our energy, or life force, down. As we progress and explore the many layers of our being through asana and breath work, we begin to access our deepest center where consciousness can truly transcend and expand. In this three hour workshop, Joan will discuss this progression and guide you through a safe and deep practice as we move into challenging postures and learn how to make them accessible for all bodies! An understanding of sun salutations and standing postures is recommended for this course.
The Art of Sequencing
Saturday afternoon 14.30 - 16.30
Sequencing that transforms
Have you ever wondered why you practice certain postures in a specific order? Why do you feel different after different types of practices and how can you order the sequence so you leave feeling transformed? In this two hour workshop, Joan will break certain sequences down and explain the cause and effect by looking at the progression taught in that sequence, the component parts that were targeted, and preps and counters used to get you safely in and out of the poses. Bring a notebook and something to write with and learn how to sequence a yoga class so it transforms every layer of your being! You will leave with an understanding of how to sequence and also leave with a few sequences to practice too!
